Do you still wash a coated car?

What actually changes

A coating leaves a hard, slick, water-repellent surface bonded to the paint. Practically, that means dirt has far less to grip, water beads and rolls off carrying a lot of that dirt with it, and what remains tends to come away with a wash mitt rather than needing to be scrubbed.

The realistic version of the promise: washing gets faster and easier, the vehicle looks clean for longer between washes, and rain does a meaningful amount of the work for you.

What it does not change

• The vehicle still gets dirty. Road film, pollen and dust still land on it.
• It is not impact protection. A coating will not stop a rock chip — that is a different product.
• It is not scratch-proof. It adds hardness at the surface, but an automatic brush wash will still put swirls in a coated car.
• It is not permanent. Coatings have a service life, and how they are cared for affects it substantially.

How to wash a coated vehicle

   Rinse thoroughly first. Most of the scratching in any wash happens when grit gets dragged across the surface. Get the loose material off before anything touches the paint.

   Use a pH-neutral soap and two buckets — one for soap, one to rinse the mitt. Harsh degreasing detergents strip the properties you paid for.

   Dry it rather than letting it air dry, with a clean microfiber or filtered air. Water spots are the main way a coated finish starts to look tired, especially with hard water.

Skip automatic washes with spinning brushes entirely. Touchless is a reasonable compromise when you are short on time, though the strong chemicals they use are not ideal as a routine.

What shortens a coating’s life

Aggressive detergents, brush washes, letting bird droppings or bug splatter sit in the Texas sun, and hard water left to dry on the surface. None of it is catastrophic in isolation; it is the accumulation that dulls the finish and reduces how well water beads.

What to send when you ask

Your vehicle’s year, make, model and color, its current condition, whether it lives outside, and how you normally wash it. That last one genuinely affects the recommendation — there is no point specifying a coating that will not survive the way the vehicle is actually looked after.
